The recent passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill by India's both the Houses of Parliament has sparked significant opposition from Islamists, Sunni Muslim organizations and Jihadi leaders. The bill proposes to limit the unlimited powers that Waqf boards used to enjoy.
One amendment ensures representation from all sects of Islam, including Shia and other minority groups, whereas the original Waqf Act was mainly for Sunnis.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill aims to limit excessive and unconstitutional powers that Waqf boards used to enjoy. Under the old Waqf Act, Waqf boards had the authority to declare any property as 'Waqf property' without proper judicial oversight, often leading to disputes, encroachments, and land grabbing. The amendments seek to introduce more transparency and legal accountability in how Waqf properties are identified and managed.
